Llanfaglan (Llanvaglan) is about 90 miles from Staffordshire. LLANVAGDALEN, or LLANVAGLAN (LLANVAGLAN), a parish in the hundred of ISGORVAI, county of CARNARVON, NORTH WALES, 2 1/2 miles (W. S. W.) from Carnarvon, containing 156 inhabitants. This parish, which derives its name from the dedication of its church to St. Baglan, is situated on the Menai strait, near its southern extremity, and comprises only a few farms and widely scattered dwellings. The living is a perpetual curacy, annexed to the vicarage of Llanwnda, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Bangor : the great tithes are appropriated to the Principal and Fellows of Jesus' College, Oxford. The church, situated in the centre of a large field, to which there is no public road, is an ancient edifice, consisting of a nave and chancel, with a spacious chapel on the north side : the eastern gable is ornamented with the remains of an ancient cross, curiously sculptured. The average annual expenditure for the support of the poor is £ 68. 13. | 171 | (Research):MANORS The manor of ANSLEY was held together with Hartshill by the Countess Godeva before the Conquest. In 1086 it was farmed with the rest of her estates by Nicholas. (fn. 11) It was said in 1482 to be held of the Prior of St. Mary's, Coventry, (fn. 12) and it descended with Hartshill (q.v.) to Sir Alexander Colepeper. (fn. 13) Sir Thomas Colepeper, grandfather of Sir Alexander, had in 1410 enfeoffed Henry Ludford of pastures in Ansley containing 50 acres, to hold at a rent of 24s. 10d.; and Sir Alexander in 1505 gave to John Ludford, grandson of Henry, Ansteley Hay and Oxehay and the Hall grounds, amounting to another 140 acres. At John's death about 1532 he was holding 300 acres of Sir Alexander. (fn. 14) As the manor was entailed these grants gave rise to various controversies between the Colepepers and Ludfords. William Ludford, son and successor of John Ludford, claimed the manor of Ansley and was accused by Sir Alexander Colepeper of stealing a deed relating to the lease of Ansteley Hay and Oxehay from Sir Alexander's house in Kent. (fn. 15) This matter was settled by arbitration in 1535, (fn. 16) but further disagreements arose between Sir Alexander's son Thomas and Thomas Ludford, who had succeeded his father William in 1540. (fn. 17) This also was settled by arbitration in 1544, Ludford agreeing to pay rent for the Ansley lands to Colepeper. (fn. 18) Thomas Ludford died in 1556 holding land in Ansley. (fn. 19) Thomas Colepeper's brother John sold the manor in 1551 to Robert and Edmund Wyeth of Loughborough, co. Leicester. (fn. 20) They sold it in 1562-3 to John Rampton of Atherston, (fn. 21) who with his wife Joyce conveyed it in 1567 to George Wyghtman of Elmesthorpe, co. Leicester. (fn. 22) Wyghtman mortgaged it in 1591-2 to William Glover, afterwards a knight and alderman of London. He obtained in 1601 from Thomas Wyghtman of Burbage, son and heir of George, a release of all his title in the manor, which passed to Sir Thomas Glover, son of Sir William. (fn. 23) Sir Thomas and his mother Anne sold it in 1608 to James Wightman of Brackman, co. Leicester, (fn. 24) and he with his son Thomas conveyed it in 1611 to Matthew Bates, (fn. 25) who with the Wightmans sold it to George son of Michael Ludford and grandson of Thomas named above. (fn. 26) George settled the estate in 1618 upon Sarah Warren, his intended wife, and died in 1627, leaving a son John not quite 3 years old. (fn. 27) John Ludford was buried at Ansley in 1675. He had several sons, but all died without issue. James, the longest survivor, died in 1699 at the age of 44, and under his will Ansley manor passed to his nephew Thomas Bracebridge, son of his sister Jane, on condition that he should take the name Ludford. (fn. 28) Thomas died leaving no children, and his brother Samuel Bracebridge succeeded to Ansley. He also took the name Ludford, and died in 1727. (fn. 29) His son John made conveyances of the manor in 1728 and in 1749, probably on his marriage with Juliana daughter of Sir Richard Newdigate, bart. (fn. 30) Ludford. | 187 | (Research):Mr. Henry Clay Senteney, an account of whose visit here was given some weeks since, returned to his home at Des Moines, Iowa, stopping on the way at Louisiana, Mo., to visit a sister-in-law, widow of Colonel Francis Senteney, who commanded the Second Missouri Confederate Infantry and was killed during the siege ot Vicksburg. He met his death at night while his Regiment was lying down, a chance bullet striking him in the eye and passing through his head just as he was in the act of rising from his reclining posture. Mr. Henry Senteney, who was a member of Colonel Boone's Twenty-eighth Kentucky Federal Regiment, had the body disinterred sometime after the war and removed for burial at his home. He had been burled on the field where he fell, and when he was removed his uniform and boots, with spurs, were found in nearly a perfect condition. The evidence shows that on November 16, 1665, the same day that his case had been ordered sent up to the Provincial Court, Lumbrozo and Alcocks referred their disputes to arbitration, and that they "chose us William Calvert and Zachary Wade gent. to determine all business between them." Each liti- gant bonded himself for 10,000 pounds of tobacco "to stand to our award", concerning the differences between them, viz.: "for the sd Lumbrozo's having in his custody severall of the sd Alcocks goods taken out of his house" when his wife and child were murdered. Calvert and Wade awarded Alcocks 900 pounds of tobacco, and the court ordered Lumbrozo's administrator to make payment of this amount (pp. 92-93). At the same court two other suits for small debts against Lumbrozo's estate were heard and decided (pp. 93-94). The record also shows that Lumbrozo had a son born after the father's death and after his widow's remarriage: "John Lumbrozo Sonne of John Lumbrozo decd was Born in the monthe of June Anno Dni 1666" (p. 130). It may be recalled that at the July, 1663, court, Lumbrozo and his maid servant Elizabeth Wilde had been presented for having brought on an abortion upon her, she charging him with responsibility for her pregnancy, and that he saved himself by marrying her, thus disqualifying her from appearing as a witness against him (Arch. Md. LIII, 1-li). Lumbrozo died late in 1665, or early in 1666. His widow Elizabeth lost no time in marrying a second husband, John Browne, a well-to- do Charles County planter, as she, under the name Elizabeth Browne, took out letters of administration upon Lumbrozo's estate May 25, 1666, the month before her son by Lumbrozo was born. A suit for debt heard at the November 27, 1666, court, shows that she was then again a widow (p. 48). | 197 | (Research):NOTES TO THE PEDIGREE OF THE STRELLEYS. 6. Hugh de Strelley (3rd son of Sampson) occurs in 1225 (Pipe re H. IIL), when he was sued by Robert Fitz Geoffry and Robert, son of Robert. He and his wife, Matilda, were funders of the old chapel at Mapperley, Derbyshire. It was erected within the enclostit of their mansion about the year 1230 (vide Cox*s "Churches of Derbyshire," iv.j ai6). In the year 1237 he held rj acres in the Serjeawty of Sandiacre.— (Pipe). In the year 1259, Matildk de Strelley released to William le Vavasour -40 acres of land in Mapperley, and also a messuage held^ by her as dower, and the said William, at her request, granted the same land and messuage to Thomas de Quappelode in fee, at the yearly rent of 4s>, with foreign service and suit ol court, to the chief lords for W. le Vavasour. Robert, son of John Ingram, of Nottingham, and Thomas le Sauner put in their claim (Cal. Fin., vol x. of this Journal), As late as 10 Hen. 6 (a.d. 1433) Robert Strelley, of Strelley, held land in Mapperley, to value of 20s. per ann. In 1259 (43 H. III., Pipe) the Sheriff accounted for some arrears of payments due from Matilda, widow of Hugh de Strelley. She was living in 1262, when Eudo de Mapperley and Thomas were employed in her service. | 200 | (Research):On Nov 18th, 1881; Mary as the widow of Richard Dearen had applied for pension and proving that they were married. Her brother B.L. Hutchason stated that Mary was her sister and they were married on 31 of January 1837 by rev John Hardin.
