365 | 1843-1926 Louise first married to E. Laval Arwood about 1860 and had JamesAndrew and Theodore Napnee Arwood. Laval died in the fighting at StoneMountain,Georgia in 1864. I believe Louise and the boys were livingwith theArwoods in Cobb County Georgia while Laval was away buttradition goesthat their home was burned and Louise said her and theboys and hersister lived in the slave quarters for awhile, beforemoving to herbrothers home. Widow's Application for a pension based on Luke R. Medford's time intheCSA was found at the Texas State Archives. #31032 was filedSeptember1915 and approved December 1, 1915. At the time theapplication was made, she was apparently living with Nora Hall, herdaughter, in New Boston,Texas, but had lived in Red River County from1870 until after 1902. Shedid spend time with her other children inRed River Co. She gives his name as Luke Roberson Medford and that they were married10April 1868 in Marshall County, Alabama. She was born in CherokeeCounty,Georgia and has lived in Texas since 1870. She says she haslived in NewBoston since 1902. Luke enlisted in Alabama and served four years in Company H 7thAlabamaCavalry. Joseph William Levi Hall, Louise's son in law and Thadius O.McCleskeyher step son in law sign the document which says they knewLuke R.Medford to be her husband, and she has not remarried. Thad McCleskey swears that he lived in Marshall County Alabama atthebreaking out of the Civil War. I enlisted and served in Company F,8thAlabama Regiment of Cavalry. I was not acquainted with Luke R.Medfordbefore the war but became acquainted with him soon afterwardand wasclosely associated with him up until time of his death. I havehad manytalks with him about his experiences in the war, the battleshe was inand I know from every source except actual service with himthat heserved in the Confederate Army and that he was honorablydischarged. A note from the War Dept. Adjutant General's office: Records showthatL.R. Medford fifth sergeant, 2nd Battalion Alabama Cavalry(subsequentlyCo. H., 7th Alabama Cavalry) CSA enlisted November 15,1862. On the rolldated December 31 1863, last on file and reportedpresent. No laterrecord was found. John A. Shields age 76 and living in Wood County Texas says he knewLukeMedford and served with him two years. Mr. Shields was thenwounded andwas no longer with the Company. I know personally that henever desertedhis post or abandoned his post of duty during the CivilWar. Evidently in July 1921 Louise was visiting her son, by her firstmarriageJames A. Arwood in Jones County, Texas and her check, Warrant# 16664 inthe sum of $24.00 was never received. (two such checks?)T.O. McCleskeyand J.A. Arwood had to sign a surety bond for the StateComptroller toreissue her a check. The surety bond was for $48.00 On the 5th April 1926 in the town of Avery, Louise Medford died inthehome of Ed Medford, her son (actually step son), that her lastcheck hasnot been cash and that I am the daughter of Louise Medford.signed MayWood 24th April, 1926 Undertaker George W. Medford Mrs L.R. Medford, aged 83 passed away Monday morning at 11 o'clock,April4, 1926. Some three years ago she had a stroke of paralysis fromwhichshe never wholly recovered. She bore her affliction with greatfortitude. In 1868 she was married to L.R. Medford. To them were borneightchildren, five of whom survive her. We will miss her pleasant smiles, the warmth of her greeting, theinspiration of her presence and the glorious example of herChristianlife. When her funeral service was conducted, the church wasbeautifullydecorated with flowers, besides many floral offerings werein evidence. She who sleeps beside the loved ones near the old home isa treasuredmemory, and as time passed on swift wings the hearts thatmirror herimage will never grow weary of it's sacred trust.
