4907 | Elder Larkin Scott,of Bentonville, Ark., was born in Barren County,Ky.,in 1818, and is a son of Samuel and Hannah (Phillips) Scott. Thefatherwas of Scotch-Irish descent, born in North Carolina, and thereresideduntil his marriage, when he immigrated to Kentucky, and died inCallawayCounty, of that State, in 1837. He was a farmer. His wife wasborn inEast Tennessee, and died in 1842, having borne eleven children,only twoof whom are living. Larkin was the ninth in the family, andwas educatedin the pioneer schools of Kentucky. April 17, 1836, he wasmarried toMiss Charlotte, daughter of Daniel and Sarah (Caldwell)Kirk, who areVirginians by birth. Mrs. Scott was born in DaviessCounty, Ky., in 1819,and is the mother of twelve living children:Francis M. (deceased),Margaret A. (wife of M. A. Jenkins). James F.,Mary J. (wife of DavidHoover), Sarah C. (wife of Frank Carter), NewtonB., John W., Celia F.(wife of Larkin Wilson), David P., Martha M.(wife of William Oakley),William T. and Matilda Ellen. Rev. Scott hassixty-seven grandchildrenand seven great-grandchildren. In 1840 heleft Kentucky and moved to DadeCounty, Mo., but in 1856 came to BentonCounty, Ark., and purchased afarm of 200 acres four miles fromBentonville. In February, 1888, hemoved to Bentonville, where heexpects to pass the remainder of his days.In 1842 he became a memberof the Christian Church, and in 1868 wasordained a minister of thatdenomination. He organized the AntiochChurch, and was pastor of thesame for about eighteen years. He alsoorganized a congregation atRobinson School-house, and was pastor of thatflock for eight years. Heis [p.889] the organizer and pastor of the WireSpring Church, and isalso pastor of the Lowell Church. Elder Scott isthe eldest minister inBenton County, where he is widely known as a trueChristian gentlemanand a useful and upright citizen. His wife has been amember of theChristian Church for fifty-four years. Their youngest childstillresides with them. Elder Scott preached his first sermon in asmallbrick school house in Bentonville. 4908 | Eldridge Blain Eldridge "Moe" Blain, 76, of Waco, died Saturday, August 24, 2002 in a local nursing home. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 10:00am, Tuesday, August 27 at Waco Memorial Park with Rev. Dan White officiating. Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey, 6101 Bosque Blvd. is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Blain and his family were familiar residents of South Waco and Bells Hill. He attended Waco High School where he played football for the Waco High Tigers until joining the Army in 1944. After his service he went to work for Owens-Illinois Glass as an electrician and computer technician for more than forty years. Moe was preceded in death by his wife of fifty six years, Annette Herring Blain, his father, William Arnold Blain, his mother Bertha Harris Blain , his brothers J.B. , Jess, Joe Hal, Frank, and Arnold "Buster" Blain , his sisters Nancy Summerour, Elizabeth Elkins, and Lillie Baker. He is survived by his brothers Charlie and Robert, his son, Bobby Jack Blain and wife Linda, granddaughters, Crystal Bailey, Jennifer Johnson, and Alysen Cox. 4936 | Elmer, Ebenezer, representative, was born in Cedarville, N.J., in 1752;son of the Hon. Theophilus Elmer. He became a physician in his native placeand practised until the Revolutionary war. He joined the army in 1776asensign, and the following year was appointed surgeon of the 2d NewJerseyregiment. After the war he removed to Bridgeton, N.J., and practised medicineuntil1789, when he was elected to the state legislature. He served in thelowerhouse until 1795, being speaker for several sessions. He was a representative inthe7th, 8th and 9th congresses, 1801-87, was collector of customs forBridgeton,N.J., 1808, vice-president of the state council, 1807-15, and was commanderofa brigade of militia in the war of 1812. He was vice-presidentofBurlington college, 1807-27, and was a charter member and president of theNewJersey state society of the Cincinnati. He died at Bridgeton, N.J., Oct.18,1843. 4937 | Elmer, Jonathan, senator, was born in Fairfield, N.J., Nov. 29, 1745;sonof the Hon. Theophilus Elmer; grandson of the Rev. David Elmer; and brotherofthe Hon. Ebenezer Elmer. He was graduated in medicine from the Universityof Pennsylvania in 1771 and practised in his native state. He served as a delegate in the Continental congress in 1776-78, 1781-84, and1787-88,and on the formation of the government he was elected a U.S.senator,resigning his seat at the close of the 1st congress. He was a member of thestate legislature in 1780 and 1784, and was surrogate of Cumberland county, 1784-1802. Soon after that he was chosen presiding judge of thecountycourt of common pleas, resigning in 1804. He was elected a member oftheAmerican philosophical society in 1772, and president of the New Jerseymedicalsociety in 1787. He was a trustee of the College of New Jersey, 1782-95. 4938 | Elmer, Lucius Quintius Cincinnatus, representative, was born inBridgeton, N.J., Feb. 3, 1793; son of Ebenezer Elmer, an officer of the American Revolution, a charter member of the New Jersey society of theCincinnatiand its president at the time of his death in 1843. His son, Lucius,acquiredhis education in his native state and in Philadelphia, Pa. He servedduringthe war of 1812 as lieutenant in a military company, later gaining promotiontothe rank of brigade-major and inspector. He was admitted to the bar in 1815 and practised in Bridgeton. He served in the state assembly, 1820-23, andin1824 was made prosecutor of pleas for Cumberland county, and United States attorney for New Jersey. In 1842 he was elected, as a Democrat, a representative in the 28th congress. He was attorney-general ofthestate, 1850-52, and was appointed a justice of the New Jersey supreme courtin1852 and 1859, retiring from the bench in 1870 on account of advanced age.Hewas president of the New Jersey society of the Cincinnati at the time ofhisdeath. The College of New Jersey conferred upon him the degree of A.M. in1824and that of LL.D. in 1865, and he was a trustee of the college, 1829-64.His published works include: Elmer's Digest of the Laws of New Jersey(1838,4th ed., 1868); Elmer' s Book of Law Forms; Genealogical andBiographicalaccount of the Elmer Family (1860); Reminiscences of the Bench and Bar of New Jersey; History of Cumberland county (1869); History of theConstitutionand Government of New Jersey with. She walked to church Sunday and on returning the surprise awaited her. A bountiful dinner was served, and she received many tokens of remembrances from many friends, as well as from her family. She was born in 1826 at Columbia, Pa, and was the oldest daughter of John T. Learned and Aletta Seeley. She i s a granddaughter of John Learned and Polly Townsend, a great granddaughter of John Learned and Mary White. On t h e mother's side she is a granddaughter of Benjamin Seeley and Pamelia Edsall, a great granddaughter of Israel Seeley and Millicent .Stone. The Seeleys were early s e t t l e r s of Chemung county. She married J. R. Crowell in 1846 and six children were born to them, four of whom a r e living. In the '50s she was one of only two nurses in the western UnitedStateswho knew how to run the Bird Respirator when the polio epidemichit,leaving her on call 24 hours a day to train nurses and doctors alloverthe West how to run the respirator. 4946 | Elva M. Beckstrom Elva Mae Beckstrom died peacefully on Aug. 31, 2002, in Placerville.Shewas 81 years old. She was born on Nov. 22, 1920, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, the fourth childofBrigham Fielding and Laura Selinda Bringhurst Duffin. The familymoved toSanta Paula in 1927 where she attended local schools. Upon graduation from Santa Paula High School, she attended VenturaJuniorCollege, majoring in music. On June 21, 1941, she married hersweetheartReid J. Beckstrom, in the Salt Lake City Mormon Temple. The couple lived in Inglewood where she became a homemaker andenjoyedparticipating in musical activities and singing in a girls'trio. Theirfirst two children were born during this time. In 1947,following the endof World War II, she and her husband moved toCoalinga where two morechildren were born. In 1961 her family moved with her husband's career to Davis. Afterherchildren left for college, she worked as an admissions officer atUCDavis. In 1981 her husband retired and they settled in Somerset, wheretheybuilt their own home and cultivated beautiful gardens. In 1991 shejoinedwith her husband in establishing the El Dorado Stake GenealogyCenter inPlacerville. During this time she was able to trace herancestors back tothe early 1500s. She was active in several organizations in the LDS church, PTA,GirlScouts and other civic and community activities. She loved singinganddancing and performed in various musical productions throughout herlive.She was a talented artist and seamstress, an excellent cook, andlovingwife and mother. She made many friends and faithfully supportedherhusband and children in all their activities and endeavors. She loved life, had an easy laugh and enjoyed people of all ages andfromall walks of life. She was particularly fond of her grandchildrenandgreat-grandchildren. She was much loved and will be missed by allwho hadthe good fortune to know her. She especially appreciated the care and kindness of her dearneighbors,her compassionate doctors, and the staff at MarshallHospital during herlast days of life. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, RalphBringhurstDuffin; a sister, Laura Marie Cosby; and two grandchildren. She is survived by her beloved husband, Reid, to whom she hadbeenmarried for 61 years; a sister, Ellen Lucille Revill of Simi; abrother,John Gilbert Duffin of Henderson, Nev.; her children and theirspouses,David and Linda Beckstrom of Snohomish, Wash., Elaine andHarold Cluff ofMcCall, Idaho, Jan and Erin David Bigler of Provo,Utah, and Karen andAaron Niepoetter of Bloomington, Ill.; 17grandchildren; and 28great-grandchildren.
