William Brooks's large family and store accounts with JohnPynchonevidently made progress in the accumulation of propertydifficult. It waseasy to get trusted at Pynchon's store so long as theone desiring creditwas possessed of fertile acres; but the day ofreckoning with Pynchon wassure to come. On December 30, 1675, WilliamBrooks sold to Pynchon fourparcels of land, amounting to 78 acres, forwhich he allowed Brooks œ60,and when the accounts were balancedPynchon was owing Brooks œ8, whichwas placed to his credit andfurnished the basis of another account, andmore goods were bought. That he was, ten years later, quite willing toturn his steps towardsDeerfield, to begin again where land was cheap, there can be no doubt, but as he lived only two years after going toDeerfield, it is probablethat he made little headway in the accumulationof property.

BROOKS FAMILY AMONG FOUNDERS OF NEW ENGLAND--SOUTHERN BRANCH TRACES TO BROOKE OF BROOKE MANOR--ONE WAS COLONIAL GOVERNOR

If Mr. Brooks, Brook, or Brooke wants to vary the spelling ofhisname--and variety is the spice of life, although a tritesaying--let himwrite it Brockx or Broeckx.

He has only to go back a few centuries, say to 1,000, and he willfindthat his grandfather of that day and generation, was eitherBroeckx, orBrucksch, or Brucks, or Bruksch, or Brocks. That is, if hecame fromGermany or Holland. If he was a plain Anglo-Saxon gentleman,he was JohnBrok, Esq. Or he was Broke or Broc, or de Broc, or de laBroc, or de laBrok, or del Broke.

William de Doylo del Broke is a name down in the records of the timeofKing John. Alice de la Broke is a name we also find about thisperiod.

The name was probably ate-Broc, originally, at atte-Broc, orattenbroke, meaning near a brook. That is, one living near a brook.Attenbroke becamein time A-Broke, which in time became plain Brook.Abrook is alsoresponsible for Addenbrooke.

Present day forms of the name are Brook, Brooks and Brooke. Itisimpossible to ring many changes on the name.

Ralph Brooke, York Herald, 1596, is said to have lived near the mouthofa brook, and he was at first Brokesmouth, but changed it to asimpler andsaner form. Brooker and Brookman are other variations ofthe name derivedfrom brook.

The family has long been seated at Whitchurch, Hampshire, England. AttheBrooke house, King Charles I. spent a night. "The night of October18,1644, the King lay at Whitchurch, at Mr. Brooke's house."

5516 Henry Ingram, 7th Viscount of Irvine (30 April 1691 –  4 April 1761), styled The Honourable Henry Ingram until 1736, was an English landowner and politician.

Irvine was the fourth son of Arthur Ingram, 3rd Viscount of Irvine, by Isabella Machel, daughter of John Machel (or Machell), Member of Parliament for Horsham, of Hills, Sussex.[1] He was returned to Parliament for Horsham in 1721 (succeeding his elder brother Arthur), a seat he held until 1736, when he succeeded Arthur in the viscountcy.[1][2] This was a Scottish peerage and did not entitle him to an automatic seat in the House of Lords although he was forced to resign his seat in Parliament as Scottish peers were barred from sitting in the House of Commons. He also succeeded Arthur as Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire, which he remained until his death.[1]

Lord Irvine married Anne Scarborough, daughter and co-heiress of Charles Scarborough, of Windsor, Berkshire, Clerk of the Green Cloth. There were no children from the marriage. He died in April 1761, aged 69, and was succeeded in the viscountcy by his nephew, George. The Viscountess of Irvine died in March 1766.[1]

5521 Henry of Acton, elder son of Robert of Acton--Henry Bures of ActonHall, Esquire, was born in 1502. He succeeded his father as lord of themanors of Acton, Moryeves, Foxherd and Brokehall. The manors of Roydon and Whersted in Suffolk were given to him and "the heirs of his body" in1517 by Sir James Hulbert and William Frost, as has already been said. Itis probable that this gift was the result of the wish of the late EarlofOrmond, (See note 1) expressed before his death in 1515. Henry Bures also possessed in the parish of Roydon the manor of Martyns and Sulves, which presumably reached him through the Sampsons.

(Note 1) Amongst the Harleian MSS. there is a receipt dated 28 Nov.1516for œ30 from Sir William Waldegrave being a year's rent for the Manors ofRoydon and Whersted to John FitzJames, one of the executors of the willofThomas, late Earl of Ormond.

Henry Bures married Anne, elder daughter of George Waldegrave of Smallbridge, Bures St. Mary's, Suffolk, Esquire, and left issue; Jane, Bridget, Anne and Mary. He died 5 July 1528 and was buried in the Lady Chapel at Acton, where there is a brass to his memory. Anne, thewidow, married, Sir Clement Heigham of Barrow, Suffolk, Knight, Lord ChiefBaron of the Exchequer, by whom she had issue. He died 9 March 1571; shedied 24 April 1590, and lies buried at Thornage, Norfolk, where there isabrass to her memory.

Henry Bures in his will states his wish that the manor of Roydonshould pass to his heirs male, and on default of such to the heirs male ofhis brother Robert, and for default of such to "the Heires of the bodyofme." The terms of the entail of Roydon were quite different, thesuccessionbeing strictly limited "to the heirs of his body," i.e. Henry Bures' body, andit was this entail which was followed throughout in the inq. p.m. Whateverthe reasons were for breaking the entail of Acton, the practical resultsasseen in the next generation, Brokehall. The provisions of this will weresetaside when the estate came to be settled.

The manor of Acton had been conveyed in 1507 to Robert Bures (fatherof Henry) and "to the heirs male of his body." The inq. p.m. on theestateof Robert Bures in 1525 states that the manor of Acton was "settled totheuse of Henry Bures, son and heir of the said Robert, and the heirs ofhisbody, failing these to the use of Robert Bures brother of the said Henryandthe heirs of his body," etc.... The inquisition contradicts the deedofconveyance. The manor was entailed in 1507 upon the "heirs male" of RobertBures, which meant that Robert Bures the second son of Robert Bures should have succeeded upon the death of his elder brother Henry without maleissue. We know that he did not so succeed, that on the contrary the manor passedto the "heirs" of Robert of Acton and not to the "heirs male." Theentailwas broken. At this time "no subject could dispose of lands or theirtenureby will. Lands were all vested in the Crown and could be alienated (i.e., soldor bequeathed) only by fine to the King for permission or by the findingofan inq. p.m. as to how by a feudal law they passed at death" (ThomasM.Blagg, in a letter to the writer).(See note 2)

(Note 2) It is to be inferred from the inq. p.m. on the estate ofRobertBures that all his lands in Suffolk except his remainder interest inMoryevesmanor had been settled to the uses of his will. This was a device to enablethe disposition of lands by will. Robert could not however bysettlementbreak the entail of  Acton manor. This entail however was not, so far astherecord shows,  brought to the attention of the inquisitors. Henry, Robert'sson, was then a young man of 23 years and doubtless hoped to have a son.Robert, his brother,  who was next heir to Henry, was a youth of 17 years. Itwasfor him or his guardian to prove the entail. On the evidence before the inquisitors their finding was right. The same is true for like reasonsofthe Suffolk inq. p.m. on the estate of Henry Bures. [Ed.]

I had access to the Crawford County Historical Book.  In this book it lists Stephen Skaggs ( b 1834 - d. 1-15-1847) married to Manerva Hewit (b 1840) on January 29, 1850.  The parents of Stephen Skaggs are listed as James W. Skaggs (b . 1790 - d. abt. 1855) and Celia (maiden name unkown)  b. 1798 - d. 11-1869.  Both parents are listed as being from Kentucky.  I believe they are from Green County, Kentucky.

These are the rest of James and Celia Skaggs children:

Narcissus Skaggs (b. 1842 - d. abt. 1849) m Morrison Toadwine Jermiah V. Skaggs (b. abt. 1827 -d. abt. 1869) m Mary "Jane" Huitt Sarah Jane Skaggs (b. 5-6-1831 - d. 2-14-1889) m George Huitt Thomas Jefferson Skaggs (b. 1842 - d. 11-27-1886) m Eliza Evans James Holbert Skaggs (b. 6-5-1844 - d. abt. 1890) m Julia Odel Henry Willis Brazzeal (adopted son b. 1836 - d. 1900) m Eliza Huitt

The reason I wrote you is I believe my great great grandfather (William "Bud" Evans) married the daughter of Jermiah and Mary "Jane " Skaggs and my gg grandfather's sister (Eliza Evans) married Thomas Jefferson Skaggs.

I'm not sure if this is any help to you, but if you would have any information concerning these people I would appreciate your help.

Thanks again for your time and help.

5545 Hi there,  thanks for getting back to me so fast! I have some more info for  you.  James Skaggs, son of Francis Marion and Emily J. Moneynever married.  He came to Arkansas (Black Rock - where his brother GeorgeA. and sister-in-law lived).  He was killed when kicked in the head by a mule and is buried in that area.

He was living with Emily, George A, Nancy J. and my grandfather JohnH. Burbank in 1880 in Green Co, Ky. census for 1880.  He was 18 years old at that time.  His name was listed as James P. Skaggs.

Francis Marion and Emily moved to Jefferson Co KS in early 1860s (Ihave it written somewhere but cant put my hand on it),  They lived at Oskaloosa and were found in Kentucky Township with I would estimate (did not count them) about 50 other Skaggs families.  Francis M. died there I am almost certain before 1880 and is buried there. Emily made two trips back to KY according to court records in the Money book at Greensburg Library because Grizzy was left destitute after Perry died and had to sue her children to sell some land to live on.  Perry had loaned money to all of his children.  It is all in that book, very interesting.

Before Perry died, it was well known that he hid money in a creek onhis property (I have been there - his log cabin is still there).  Some indians hung him up by his heels on a tree and tried to get him totell them where the money was hidden.  He would not tell, so they left him there.  He survived that ordeal.  James E. Money owns all or almostall all of the original property that the original James Money had at Summersville, KY.  My husband and I have visited with James twice.  He is very nice and has a wealth of information about the Moneys,Skaggs, Milby's etc.
