The Centennial History of Oconto County Written by RICHARD HALL Published in 1876 Oconto County Reporter

In common with other lumbermen of that time this firm becameinvolved.SAYERS interest was devested by foreclosure and GARDNER,after a longstruggle became sole owner. In 1856 (as nearly as I canlearn) Mr. A.C.CONN became a manager for GARDNER. In 1862 CONN becamebecame a partnerand the firm was long and favorably known as CONN &GARDNER. Mr. CONNresided at Little Suamico with his family, exercisinga large and healthyinfluence. The firm steadily grew stronger and wereamong the first.Their mill was enlarged to a capacity of 70,000 perday.

Mr. GARDNER resided at Milwaukee. In Sept. 1874 CONN & GARDNER soldtoOLESON, WINANS & CO., who are the present owners. This mill isnowdevoted mainly to shingle making, cutting about 150,000 shinglesand10,000 feet of lumber daily.

Messrs. CONN & GARDNER had built a substantial store, boarding houseanddwelling house a large and valuable tank and apparatus forextinguishingfires, a tram-road to the Bay, docks for loading lumberand othervaluable structures. Mr. CONN afterwards built a large millin Floridaand has removed there and Mr. GARDNER died early in 1975.

CONN & GARDNER desired to obtain exclusive control of the streamaslumbermen. They wee not able to do so. The excellent quality ofthetimber soon induced others to seek and gain a foothold.

His brother was Joseph, and all of Thomas Hackley Warren'sfamily was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina.  Some of this family moved to Mississippi and some to Georgia. Also some of Lancelot's and Hackley's children ended up in Georgia.  This has me pointed to ThomasWarren(b1682-1683) as most likely the father of Hugh Warren(born circa1725). Maybe some research in Georgia or Mississippi will turn up moreaboutthis bunch of Warrens.

Possible Lead for Felix:

Civil War Record for Felix Warren Name: Felix Warren Pvt in the 7th Cavalry (KY/Union) Unit Mustered in: 16 Aug 1862 at Paris, Ky. Unit Mustered out: 10 Jul 1865 at Edgefield, Tn

Enlisted as a Private on 10 July 1862 in Paris, KY Enlisted in Company M, 7th Cavalry Regiment Kentucky on 10 July 1862 Transferred on 06 July 1865 Transfered in Company E, 6th Cavalry Regiment Kentucky on 06 July 1865 Mustered out on 06 September 1865 in Louisville, KY

This lineage is still not verified, although at least two other researchers have Mary Jane Underwood for the 2nd wife of Felix GrundyWarren.

Family records of our own listed Felix Grundy Warren's 2nd wife as Mary Jane Johnson.

Possible Leads: One of the sons of Abraham Holland Underwood and Mary Jane Morgan Underwood was a John Henry Underwood born August 7, 1866, in Perry County, Alabama. In Mary Lee Underwood's (his sister) journal, he wrote"going to Texas". This was dated June 6, 1888. Numerous members of this Underwood family were in the Bell County area in the late 1880s, according to Mary Lee's journal.

Hopefully, this will be a match.

My Underwood Family is from Holland, Sparks, and Little River all in Bell County and all in an area of 15-20 miles apart. My Underwood family married into the Morgan family...I would think there has to besome kind of connection...I would like to talk to you more about this..My family came to Bell co sometime between the later 1800's or early 1900's...I have a picture taken in 1902 of the Underwoods and Morgans.

Peter Underwood was in Green County in 1830 and 1840. He had children that fits Mary Jane Underwoods birth time frame. Most of his children are not listed in record thus far.

Also living nearby is Ila Johnson.  It may be that Mary Jane Underwood first married a Johnson, perhaps from Ila's family, then later married Felix Grundy Warren. It would explain our family indicating Mary Jane was a Johnson and other families indicating Mary Jane was a Underwood.
