MONTROSE - Maria Bernerdita "Bernie" Ulibarri deGonzales, age 63,aresident of Montrose since 1984, died aftera three-month illnessTuesdayevening, April 17, 2001, in theMontrose Memorial Hospital atMontrose.

Maria Bernerdita Ulibarri was born on Feb. 2, 1938, in LaPuente,RioArriba County, N.M. She was raised by her uncle and auntAdolfoand MariaUlibarri and spent her childhood at La Puente,N.M.,where she grew toadulthood, receiving her education inTierraAmarilla and in Chama, N.M.

When she was a child, in the spring of each year Bernie wouldvisitfamilymembers, ususally her uncles, camping in the mountains,atradition shecontinued for many years. Being in the mountainsofNorthern New Mexicocontinued a long family tradition becauseof thetreaty ofGuadalupe-Hildago in 1948, her ancestor, MariaJesus Ulibarri,a member ofthe Northern Pueblo known as Tewa,moved to La PlacitaBlanca in NorthernNew Mexico. The settlementis now known as La Puenteand members of herfamily still remainin the community.

After completing school, Bernie moved to Denver and then to Chama,N.M.

In 1976, she married Moises Gonzales. Their marriage laterendedindivorce and Moises died in 1998.

Bernie moved to Cortez where she taught in theMontezuma-CortezSchoolDistrict in the bilingual program and alsoserved at theFour CornersSheltered Workshop as a supervisor as well asworkingat the CortezMemorial Hospital.

In 1984, Bernie moved to Montrose to be close to her family whereshemadeher home until the time of her death.

She put other before herself and was very active in visitingthenursinghomes, working with MADA, and serving with thePrisonMinistry. Bernie'swork on behalf of others was recognized intheretired and seniorvolunteer program by special recognition.

Bernie could always be counted on to help her family and friendswhowereill and in need of assistance. She enjoyed crocheting,readingwesternnovels, and working crossword and word searchpuzzles. Sheespeciallyloved and enjoyed homemaking and was animmaculatehousekeeper.

Bernie was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Montrose.

Surviving family members very grateful to share Bernie's lifeincludeoneson, Richard Gonzales and wife Guadalupe, of TwinFalls, Idaho, andtheirchildren, Bernie's grandchildren: Zachary,Jessica, and "Richie"RichardJr.; and two daughters:Ernestine "Tina" and husband JesusCorral, of LasVegas,Nev., and their children, Bernie's grandchildren:JoseluisandVictoria Corral; and Sally and husband Finley Pribble, ofMontrose.

Other family survivors include her aunt who raised her, MariaUlibarri,ofDolores; two brothers: Isidoro Ulibarri, of Montrose;RichardUlibarri, ofMonroe, La.; and one sister, Teofilia andhusband JohnBercillio, ofMontrose.

Bernie was preceded in death by three sisters: RosieJaramillo;Olivamaand Lugardita Ulibarri; two brothers: MiguelUlibarriand Remijo Ulibarri;one granddaughter, Lorraine Pribble;andher uncle who raised her, AdolfoUlibarri, who died in 1992.

Vigil for the deceased will be recited on Thursday, April 19,at 7 p.m.atSt. Mary's Catholic Church in Montrose.

Funeral Mass in loving remembrance and to honor Bernie's lifewillbeofficiated by Rev. Monsignor Dan Huber on Friday, April20, at 2 p.m.atSt. Mary's Catholic Church.

MONTROSE Miguel A. "Mike" Ulibarri was born on July 20, 1931, onLaPuente, N.M. He died Thursday morning, April 15, 1999, at the age of67at his home in Montrose.

Mike spent his childhood, received his education, and grew toadulthoodin Chauma, N.M.

While living in New Mexico, he worked in the logging industry andalsoworked in the saw mills of northern New Mexico.

He married Elizabeth Russell and their union was blessed withsixdaughters and three sons.

In 1969, Mike and his family moved to Montrose to be near hismother,Cecilia Ulibarri and his sisters. Mike worked for Silver TipLumber for atime before joining the City of Montrose and working inthe sanitationdepartment until his retirement in April of 1988.

Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth, on Aug. 12, 1988,inMontrose.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Montrose.

Mike especially enjoyed being outdoors, and loved fishing and campinginthe mountains. He maintained an active interest in the lives ofhischildren and grandchildren, spending as much time as possible withthem.

Survivors include six daughters: Kathy Robles, Donna Russom,PatriciaLemus, Louella Golden, all of Montrose; Edna Ulibarri, of LasCruses,N.M.; Norma Garcia, of Twin Falls, Idaho; and three sons:Richard Russom,of Chauma, N.M.; Donnie Russom and Roger Russom, bothof Montrose.

Mike was the proud grandfather of 28 grandchildren including agrandson,Joey Russom of Montrose, who he raised; and thegreat-grandfather of 21great-grandchildren.

Other family survivors include two brothers: Isadaro Ulibarri,ofMontrose; Richard Ulibarri, of Monroe, La.; and two sisters:BernieGonzales and Teofila Bercillio, both of Montrose.

Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Cecilia Ulibarri; onebrother,Ray Ulibarri; and one sister, Rosie Jaramillo.

Rosary was recited on Sunday, April 18, at 7 p.m. at the MontroseValleyFuneral Home Chapel.

Funeral Mass in remembrance and to honor Mike's life was officiatedbyThe Rev. Dan Huber on Monday, April 19, at 10 a.m. from St.Mary'sCatholic Church in Montrose.

Rite of Committal followed the Mass in the Valley Lawns Cemetery southofMontrose, with arrangements handled under the direction ofMontroseValley Funeral Home.

MONTROSE - Angie M. Trujillo, age 79, of Montrose, died early Tuesdaymorning, Sept. 30, 2003, at her Montrose residence, the daybefore shewould have celebrated her 80th birthday.

Angie M. Duran was born on Oct. 1, 1923, in South Fork, Colo.,thedaughter of Juan R. and Porforia (Trujillo) Duran.

Angie loved to cook as well as eat. She also loved canning, goingandvisiting people, great-grandchildren and flowers. Angie dearlyloved heronly brother, Alix. She also loved and enjoyed watchingwrestling and theSpanish soap operas on TV.

Surviving family members, who were honored to share Angie's life,includefour sons: Ted Bercillio (Virginia), Fermin Bercillio(Charolette), JohnBercillio (Teoflia), Larry Velasquez (Peggy); twodaughters: Mary Barbaand Annie Velasquez, all of Montrose, Colo.; 17grandchildren and 26great-grandchildren.

Angie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, AbedonTrujillo;and her special friend, Fabian Montano.

A vigil service will be held Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at St.Mary'sCatholic Church in Montrose.

A funeral service in celebration of Angie's life will beofficiatedSaturday, Oct. 4, at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church.Rite ofCommittal will follow in the Grand View Cemetery, west ofMontrose.

7870 Moses Simmons came to America on the "Fortune" which arrived at Cape Cod 9 November, 1621 and landed her 35 passengers at Plymouth, Massachusetts on 19 November, 1621,  about one year after the famous "Mayflower" landing.

Each of the 35 passengers received one acre of land in Plymouth, Massachusetts, Moses being one of these 35.

Moses died after 17 June 1689, when his will was written. It was not filed until 15 September 1691. Inventory was taken on his estate 10 September 1691, amounting to 33 pounds.

His will named: Mary Simmons who married Joseph Alden Aaron Simmons Elizabeth Simmons who married Richard Dwelly Sarah Simmons who married James Nash John Simmons (Executor of will)

The will did not name son Moses who had died in 1676 or oldest child Rebecca who had died before 1680, when her husband John Soule married a second wife.

There is no proof of Thomas Simmons, of Scituate being from this family, although they arrived about the same time.

This George Myers was listed as born in Missouri in June of 1864 in the 1900 federal census.

He left only child to be reared by Harriets parents when Harriet died in 1902.

He may be the same George Myers listed on the 1910 federal census that married again on 20 December 1908 in Finley to a Ora Farris. (Listed as age 39 2nd Marriage, born 1871, MO)

In later censuses, George listed his parents as born in Kentucky.

Curtis "Curt" E. Strickland, 59, of Bruneau, died Tuesday, Sept.30,2003, in Mountain Home. Memorial services were held Saturday, Oct. 4, at the BruneauAmericanLegion Hall. Cremation was under the direction of SummersFuneral Homes,McMurtrey Chapel, in Mountain Home.

Curt was born Oct. 16, 1943, in Boise, to Grant and Jodie Strickland.Hewas a rancher in the Bruneau valley all of his life.

"He loved animals, kids and music," his family said, adding, "Curt hadanickname for everyone. We will all miss his joking, quick witandlaughter."

William Compton witnessed Hannah Austin land sold to James Roberts in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on 25 March 1772. page 384 deeds.

Various Pittsylvania Court records between 1767-1772, names William Compton and John
Owen as having several suits against one another. Suits were dismissed.

Pittsylvania May 1773 court records requested a letter of administration for William Compton's
estate by his wife Rachel. William's inventory and appraisement dated 6 Aug 1773, valued his
estate at 113 pounds, 7 shillings, and ten pence. The inventory was recorded by the court in
Dec of 1774 and describes his property as being along the Bannister River and Squirrel Creek.

The Pittsylvania county tax records of 1797 list both a Levi and a Vincent as having approximately
65 acres along the Bannister River and Squirrel Creek. May be related to this William Compton
family.

On this 27th day of August 1832 personally appeared in open court intheGreen Circuit Court before the Judge in the said court, holden forGreenCounty, Kentucky, William Lee a resident citizen of said countyaged 78years on the 24th day of January last past, who being firstduly swornaccording to law doth on his oath make the followingdeclaration in orderto obtain the benefit of the provisions made bythe act of congress ofthe 7th day June 1832 who makes the followingdeclaration towit—that hewas drafted and served in the militia of theState of Virginia from theCounty of Buckingham as a soldier of UnitedStates in the RevolutionaryWar under a captain who marched with acompany to the Albemarle Barrackwho returned home & when he reachedthe Barracks at Albemarle he thinksthe company he was attached to wascommanded by Capt William Benning thohe does not recollect whetherthere was any officer from his own countywho commanded them nor doeshe recollect the names of . it was in thesummer of the year 1778 thathe performed this service. This service wasrendered in guardingprisoners as they moved them the Albemarle Barracks,a short distanceabove Charlottsville in Albemarle County being in theprocess length oftime he served in this tour could not state but was ofopinion that itwas months—whatever time it was he served the tour anddischarged & has--

He served as a volunteer from Buckingham County in the year 1778 ashethinks, tho of this he is not certain. The company who march I thiswaswith officers from the said county. They started out with a view tojoinGen. Stickan and at some place on their tour drew arms &ammunition. Thefirst place of destination was Point of Fork on JamesRiver in Virginiabut before (they) reached that place their march waschanged and theymarched in a direction to aid James Fahen, tho theydid not go to thatplace. He in connection with of the volunteers fromBuckingham joined alarger body of troops in that section of countysome where tho he cannotsay where, as it was to him then & now astrange part of the county. Whenthey joined the troop named before,they were put under officers, tho hedoes not recollect the officersnames for they were strangers to him, hepresumes they were Stutan'stroops. He recollects on this tour that on acertain occasion while hewas marching with the army to have seen a fieldofficer whose name heinquired and was told it was Marquis De Lafayette.This tour was ashort one, about one month, he was discharged tho hisdischarge is lostand he cannot say when he was discharged.

He served as a militiaman, being drafted from the same county, intheyear 1781 under Captain William Carnson who commanded a riflecompanywhich he served in. This company was attached to GeneralLawson'sBrigade. In this company he served as second Sergeant. Herecollects,Col. Holcomb, B. Randolph & Tucker who commanded regimentsin Lawson'sbrigade. In this service, the company he belonged tomarched to the southand he with them was in the Battle Guilford Countyalso in NorthCarolina, where he discharged about six rounds of in his company; herecollects that in that engagement there were threecaptains killed fromBedford County. All of whom he was well acquainted(with) Jacob Morris?,Wm. Jones, Thomas Helms. In this tour he servedto the best of hisrecollection three months. He served the whole timeout, he thinks andwas discharged at Bainsouco Mill in North Carolina.The battle was fought15th of March 1781. He was discharged after this,but how long he doesnot recollect. The discharge he obtained he haslost if he obtained onetho he thinks the company was discharged by thecaptain without writtendischarges.

He served a fourth tour from his county aforesaid in 1781 underCaptainThomas Liftrech or Leftrige. In this tour he thinks he wascalled out forthree months but most of the men ran away. He served hethinks two monthsand was discharged August 10, 1781 by the MajorThomas Watkins commanderof the 2nd Battalion as will appear by hisdischarge here with file whichis the only discharge he preserved. Thisdischarge was old field. Thecolonel's name of the Regiment he hasforgotten.

He served a fifth tour in the Virginia Militia in the companycommandedby Peter Garren in the Battalion commanded by Major WoodJones fromAmelia. In this tour he served also as a sergeant andmarched to thesiege of Little York, he was engaged till the surrender.This tour wasfor three month, but he was taken sick & did not servethe tour fullyout. He thinks he served from 1 and a half to two monthsof the time. Hewas discharged from the service by a lieutenant, for at(the) time thecompany had no officer of higher rank. This discharge hehas also lost.He has no other documentary testimony of his service asabove stated.

He was born Albemarle County Virginia but in that part of it nowincludedin Buckingham and he resided there wholly except a very shorttime inPrince Edward County until he removed to Kentucky in the fallof the year1788 and resides still. He settled first in Mercer County,Kentucky &from there he removed to Green County Kentucky in the year1794 inDecember and has continued to reside in Green County eversince. He hasnever drawn or applied for a pension before and he herebyrelinquishesevery claim to pension or an annuity whatever except thepresent and hedeclares his name is not on the pension roll of anyagency in any statewhatever.. Sworn to & subscribed this day yearaforesaid

We, Thomas Gains clergyman residing in Green County and state ofKentuckyand Samuel White residing in the said county hereby certifythat we arewell acquainted (with)William Lee who has subscribed andsworn to theabove declaration; that we believe him to be 78 years orage on the 24thday January last. That he is reputed and believed inthe neighborhood inwhich he resides, to have been a soldier ofrevolution and that we concuron that opinion. Sworn to and subscribed this 28th day of August 1832.

The deposition of Gresham Lee of Adair County, Ky taken at the house?ofJohn Hardwick in the County and State aforesaid of the applicationofDrusilla Lee for a pension under the Act of July 7, 1838.

Deponent being Thirty Seven years on the 30th July 1839 deposethandsaith that he was well acquainted with William Lee deceased andDrusillaLee his widow, he the deponent being their son. He furtherstates he knewhis father the aforesaid William was a pensioner on therolls of theKentucky agency and that the aforesaid William died on thetwelfth day ofFebruary eighteen hundred and thirty five and that hismother theaforesaid Drusilla Lee has remained a widow ever since thedeath of herhusband the aforesaid William to the present period andthe deponentfurther states that the family Bible which contains therecord of hisfather's marriage death and birth of his children is nowand has been inhis possession from a few days after his father's deathuntil this time.

The Deponent stated in this register which now lies before him undertheHead of Marriages in plain legible letters and figures in thefollowingwords Viz. Wm. Lee and Drusilla Lee married January 24th inthe year 1783(January the twenty fourth in the year seventeen andeighty three). Onthe same register he sees it entered Wm. Lee bornJanuary 24th 1754 andimmediately after this is entered, Druseller bornat the December 1760.And immediately before this entry is another Viz.the date married I wasthe twenty-nine years old and Drusiller was 18years and about one monthold.

And the Deponent further states that in the same family Bibleandregister under the head of Births he sees entered in the followingwordsViz. Mary Ann Grisham Lee born January the 10, 1784, Saturday 1or 2after night. Samuel Lee Born Friday the 12th May 1786, abt 8 intheafternoon. William Lee Junior born Wednesday at 8 or 9 in theafternoonthe 17 February 1789.

And so continues the register until all the children's ages of William&Drusilla are registered all of which registering is in thehandwriting ofhis Father the aforesaid William he being familiar andknowing the handwriting of his Father the aforesaid William and theDespondent has knowdoubt his father the aforesaid William Lee didwrite and make all theaforesaid entries correctly and the despondentfarther saeth not.
