Seven children, includingWilliam, or Bill, as he was commonly called, made up theCongletonfamily. Their ages ranged from fourteen to two on Octobeer16, 1877. Thefamily was poor. They were to live for the next 26 yearson 160 acresthat was not highly productive. Each year they strived tobeself-sufficient, raising their own fruits, preserving them;producingtheir own meat, drying, salting down, or canning it; plantinga garden ofvegetables, storing them in a cellar or canning them;raising chickensfor eggs and meat during the summer and went forgrinding flour. Feedinga large family was challenge; however, raisinga large family was anecessity to helpprovide labor for the items thatneeded buying. 8697 Oconto County Reporter December 29, 1910 (Thursday) researched and contributed by Richard La Brosse

Howard E. Lucia of the Lucia Bros. Motor Car company, Green Bay, and Miss Helen A. McDonald of Oconto were married in Lansing, Mich., on Wednesday.

Dear Mary Beth,

I found your posting of "Early Duck Creek History," with the nameofLucia in the index.  I was wondering if you could tell me what was said about the Lucia family.  I am tryingtofind out more information on William Henry Harrison Lucia (b.1 May 1845 ) who married Susan Catherine Ketchum(27Nov 1854).  They had at least two sons Albert Lucia and William Harrison Lucia who ran the LuciaPackardMotors in Green Bay.

Thank you for all your help

Kate wlthayer@sofnet.com

On p. 176 of Early Duck Creek History, it states: "John Lucia and his wife, Esther, had a daughter, Lusie, whomarriedEdwin Colony on Dec. 5, 1868.  A Lucy Lucia married William G. Barnes on 20 Dec. 1871."

In Wisconsin Fur-Trade People by the same authors, and In anearliertime, 1807, there was an Etienne Luciers working for Jean Baptiste Caron out of Wisconsin River.  LateraFrancois Lusignan, 1816-1819 worked for Ramsey Crooks & John Lawe at Green Bay.  I do not knowthenationality of the ones you are looking for but these are French-Canadians, apparently.

In Wisconsin Creoles, p. 306..."The Lusignan Family...This familywereprobably descendants of the French military commander at Green Bay's Fort St. Francis, from 1743 to1746.Francois (b. 1778)... married Agathe Langlade, daughter of Charles de Langlade, Jr., before witnessesandCharles Reaume in Green Bay, around 1806...."

A Lucia is mentioned on p. 137 of George E. Hall's book, A HistoryofOconto, 1969 ed.: Under a photo of a couple in  a car: "Mr. & Mrs. Antoine Martineau (she was the formerAnnaJennings) in their handsome new Buick. The picture was taken about 1906.  The buildings shown areWilliaPocquette's Saloon (complete with swinging door), LUCIA BROS GARAGE (later Jarvis Brothers andHugoLingelbach garage) and Williams Bros, Grocer."  So, it would appear the car business ran inthefamily...and in Oconto with the Lucia Brothers. Perhaps they moved onto Green Bay when the Jarvis Brothers took over??

Your genealogy volunteer,

Mary Beth Noonan Jensen

Dear Mary Beth,

Thanks so much for the Lucia look-up.  I will file it away with therestof my Lucia's.  I know I will make the connection someday.

About the Lucia Bros Garage that was owned by my branch ofLucia's.There were three brothers, Howard, William and Albert Joseph (A.J.) Lucia.  A.J. and Howardwerebicycle champions in Oconto County and WI (A.J. won the 4th of July 1895 and Howard won the 16Aug1896 1/2 mile state championship).  in 1900 A.J. and William moved to Green Bay toopenanother garage, Howard stayed in Oconto to run the Lucia Bros Garage.  William drove the firstautomobilein the state of WI as well as the first motorcycle.  Anyway, in 1907 Will got sick so he went backtoOconto and Howard to Green Bay. In 1913 A.J. died and Will sold the shop before returning to GreenBay.

And in case your wondering I got all this from the"WisconsinTercentenary" a great book but not only is it NOT indexed but the history section runs from 1-46,thetransportation section from 1-53, etc. someday I'll get around to making my own index then I'll do look upsforpeople.

Thanks again.
