9792 The Angry Elements Visit Their Fury on Coke's Capital WithDestructiveResults JUDGE GRAHAM'S DAUGHTER A VICTIM TO FLAMES

Seven Buildings Completely Wrecked and Many Others More or Less Injured. Damages at Other Places.

On Wednesday, February 26th, at 5 o'clock, the little city of RobertLee,situated on the banks of the Colorado, was the unfortunate victimof anangry wind, that dealt destruction to a considerable amount ofpropertyand death to Miss Mamie Graham, the fair young daughter ofCoke 'sHonorable county judge. The following specials received by the Standard, announced the sadnewsin San Angelo:

Robert Lee, Texas, Feb. 26, 1902. - To the Standard - Miss MamieGraham, daughter of Judge Graham, was fatally burned this afternoon. This was oneof the sad results of the hurricane that traveled fromeast to westtoday. Judge Graham's new two story residence was thefirst blown overand Miss Mamie was caught in a corner and most of herbody was burned toa crisp before she was extricated. The largeresidence was a total loss. Schintz's drug store and stock of drugs were damaged considerably. Woodloe & Brooks, general merchants, sustained some loss, theirlargebuilding being completely wrecked. The Burroughs building was completely wrecked. The following residences were blown down, but no fatalities: R. L.Hene,J. J. Vestal, Mrs. J. W. Kidd. Several others were damaged more or less. _____________

MISS GRAHAM SUCCUMBS

Robert Lee, Texas, Feb. 27, 1902. - To the Standard - Miss MamieGrahamdied at 12:15 last night. She was unconscious from about darkuntil deathrelieved her.

Miss Mamie was the 18 year old daughter of County Judge Graham, anamiable girl in the bloom of womanhood, and her shocking deathspreadgloom over the city of Robert Lee where she had many, manyfriends. Shewas conscious and rational until about dark Wednesdayevening andrecognized the voices of friends, class mates and lovedones who gatheredaround her bed to say a last farewell, though she washorribly burned, the flesh being completely crisped on her right armand lower limbs. Shebore the intense suffering with the faith of aChristian, who realizedthat death was near at hand and that deathmeant a higher, happier life.

To her loved ones the Standard pours out a full measure of sympathy.

All day the wind blew from the west, at times growing dark and denseandcloudy; but it was only thought to be one of the regular sandstorms thatso often frequent this section. No one dreamed that behindthe clouds ofsand there lurked destruction and death. But all at once,as the days wasdrawing to a close and the inhabitants of the littlecity were happy atthe thought of a calm night and a sweet rest aftersuch a day, theelements grew angry, the winds swept down in their furyand Robert Leewas left in tears.

23 August 1877
Mr. Warren Seney, son of Joshua Seney, Esq., a young gentlemen well
known in the city and county, is now lying at the residence of his parents
in Springfield Township, with one of the most terrible diseases that flesh
is heir to.  It is what is known to the profession as Tabes Dorsalis, or
atrophy of the spinal cord, as disease which occasions intense suffering,
on with which victim may exist for years, but which death alone can
relieve.  It is, in fact, a living death, and Mr. Seney, like others who have
been affected in this manner, has time and again prayed for the coming
of the grim monster.  It is now nearl five years since the symptoms of
the disease made themselves apparent, and his decline has been gradual
but sure until, since May, he has been confined to his bed.

9795 The Beginning: In so far as is known teh name "Coy" is an oldenglishsurname and is of Scotch ancestory. In tracing the old recordsit isfound that many variant spellings have been used creating a greatdeal ofconfusion. However, the name "COY", as presently spelled, isfound in theLincolnshire area of England and in Wales. It is beleivedthat thisfamily of "COYS" migrated to America from Wales. The earlies known member of the Coy line included in this familyhistoryis John Coy, Sr. The Revolutionary War Records place John Coy,Sr. andJohnCoy, Jr. in Washington County Maryland the March 16, 1778.In thePatriots' Oaths of Fidelity and Support, in 1778, underworshipful SamuelBarrits' Returns,John Coy, Sr. was listed as No. 83and John Coy, Jr. asNo. 97. John Coy, Sr.and members of his family moved westward from Maryland, bythe way of the Wilderness Road, down the Appalachian ValleythroughVirginia to Cumberland Gap, then northwest to Harrodsburg toBardston,Kentucky. The first permanent settlement in Kentucky was established on the siteofpresent day Harrodsburg in 1774.In 1776 settlers from Virginia, throughthe Virginia Legislature created the area in Kentucky as acounty inVirginia. As early as 1784 Kentuckians to consider theestablishment ofKentuckyas an independant state. In the spring of 1792delegates met inDanville to frame a state constitution and on June 1,1792 Kentucky wasadmitted to the Union. In 1781 Virginia passed a law for the releif of certain persons livingonthe Western Frontier who had been made poor by themove to Kentucky.Arecord in Jefferson County, Virginia, dated December 3, 1781,declaredJohn Coy was entitled to 400 acres of land. The land was alongtheRollingFork of the Salt River near where the town of Lyons Stationis nowlocated. John Coy is named as being granted 400 acres on the south side oftheRolling Fork in the Original Survey Grant No. 1026 dated January19,1786. The survey stated the land was granted by the county courtiJefferson County, Commonwealth of Kentucky. Originally this areaofKentucky was a part of Jefferson County, Virginia and at a laterdate, after Kentucky became a state, Nelson County was formed. In thebeginningNelson County included the land on both sides ofthe RollingFork butlater the land on the south side of the Rolling Fork becameHardin countyand later part of Hardin County formed LaRue County. Near John Coy's land was the Original Survey Grant No. 903, made outtoJohn Davis, dated December 28, 1782, was land along the RollingFork,River. Later John and Comfort Coy, John Coy, Sr. son Johnanddaughter-in-law Comfort, pruchased 400 acres near the Plantationsof JOhnand John  Davis. 9796 The birth of Charles Powell, Sr. is recorded in the Overwharton Parish Virginia Register. Charles served as a Revolutionary soldier in both Spotsylvania Co. and Halifax Co., Virginia. The family moved to Halifax Co. with Sarah's father, Anthony Gholson in 1779. About 1790 Charles and Sarah with their five youngest children migrated to Mercer Co., Kentucky. The information comes from Charles Powell Bible. Charles Powell got a land grant in Ohio for his 3 years service in the VA line. he sold it to Ambrose Bohannan for very little. a lot of soldiers sold their grants. smart sister Fleta knows where the land was and has investigated it. he got only 300 acres. I doubt Sarah would go there. the area was almost completely uninhabited. I also suspect that Charles was going to KY and raising a crop before he moved there. the Pruitts were doing that and many others I have read about. Dabney Gholson went to GA. we have a document where Charles signed a will of a dying man in south co before he went to KY. Dabney and another Halifax man Phillip Day were with him and signed also. I think he went to GA and looked there with Dabney but decided on KY. Sarah's sister who they called Sukey was in KY and probably lots more that Sarah knew. Charles served in the Spotsylvania militia, 3 years in the Continental Army with George Washington and in Halifax militia. It's very likely he served 5 years in that war. his 300 acres seems small. the water is muddy because Fleta and I know he deserted from the Halifax militia. I feel we know the reasons too. thats another letter. Perryville KY is where Thomas Walkers descendants made a settlement. that is where Charles went. Ambrose Powell who Walker named Powell Valley for was with Walker if you know the story. Most of these settlers were from LA, AL, and Spotsylvania VA. Also there were lots who came there from North Carolina. Ii have found Charles Powells brother living in Caswell NC at the time he was in VA. Charles lived south of the dan near NC and John lived near the VA line in northwest Caswell co. Duke and Betty Whalebone were in Caswell Co., NC then. there are several William Powells in Halifax Co. and have thought some of them were kin to Charles and John.

9797 The Blake genealogy lists Samuel as married to Sarah Macey. Other records list Samuel married to the Widow of Samuel Pitts, Sarah Bobet.

The Blake genealogy states that Samuel's older son married Sarah Pitts was born 1658....Samuel Jr born circa 1680.

It would seem more likely for the older Samuel...born 14 May 1650 to have married Sarah Bobet, rather then the younger Samuel.....still need to check on this further.

9800 The Cherokee Indian Claim Appl. of Thomas M. SKAGGS [#36571 20 Aug, 1907 Sturgeon,MO] contains more genealogical information that that ofAndrew Jackson SKAGGS. He stated that he was born 19 Nov,1835 in Green Co,KY, s/o Elijah & Luceretia [CRAIL] SKAGGS. His parental grandparents were Thos. & Nancy [VANCE] SKAGGS & his g-grandparents were Archibald &Betsy [THOMPSON] SKAGGS. The linage for Thos. W. SKAGGS as given in theclaim appears to be accurate until one reaches the question of the parentage of Thos. M. SKAGGS' grandfather Thomas SKAGGS.

Thos. M. SKAGGS statments concerning his g-grandmother, Betsy[THOMPSON] SKAGGS, were much more informative than those of Andrew JacksonSKAGGS. According to Thos. M. SKAGGS, she was born in GA.,again supposed to be one-half Cherokee & lived there on Conasauga Ck. [it runs through Gilner,Fannin,Murry & Whitefield Cos. of northern Georgia & alsotouches across the Tennessee/Georgia border]. Further statements included the information that she was sometimes called "Lucy" & had died in her son Thomas SKAGGS house in Green Co. at the advanced age about 1838/39. We do know that in Thomas SKAGGS' household in 1830 there was indeedanelderly lady Thomas  SKAGGS 1 m. 15-20,1 m. 50-60 1 f. 60-70,1 f. 90-100

This woman would have been born between 1730/1740, an appropriatebirth date for the mother of Archibald [b.1759], Fredrick, Thomas [b.1770] & Moses [b.1774], the sons of Charles SKAGGS.

(My own note: the author goes on to indicate that Thomas M. Skaggs grandparents were Charles Skaggs and Lucy 'Betsy' Thompson, which I concur with.)
