- John came to America with his brother, William. They embarked at Hull(Kingston Upon Hull), Humberside, England, in the autumn of 1638,and arrived in Boston the same year. John was a "tailor" by trade, butalso tilled the "acre and a half of land" that he was assigned in 1640. Autumn of 1638 - Sailed on the "Humber"to Salem, MA with hisbrotherWilliam. Founded Rowley, MA. and named it in honor of hisminister,Exekiel Rogers of Rowley, Yorkshire, England. Taylor, farmer, teacher, and one of America's first bee keepers. First clothmaker in New England.
John's will, dated 8 Feb 1670-1, mentioned his wife Ellen,childrenJoseph, Caleb, Hannah, Samuel, Sarah, John, and Mercy, and hisbrotherWilliam. John Boynton, Jr. was made executor as he had takencare of hisparents since coming of age. The will was proved 28 Mar1671.[3/2:214]
The inventory of the estate, taken 27 Feb 1670-1, listed "a hive ofbeesand an ould saddle, 1 pound 5 s". Honey bees are not native toNorthAmerica but were most likely first brought to New England in the1620'sor 1630's. In any event John Boynton would have been one of theearliestbeekeepers in this country. The inventory also includedanimals and"Tooles as belongeth to husbandry".[3/2:214216] As did mostof the earlysettlers, John fed his family by raising and tending hisown crops andlivestock. The estate amounted to 233.13.00.[3/2:216]
