- He enrolled in the Federal Army as private in Company A, 2ndKentuckyCalvary on 2 September 1861. While on patrol duty in the Army of GeneralShermanon its march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia, he was captured by enemyat Vanworth, Georgia. He was imprisoned at Cahaba, Alabama. He was later paroled at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 21 April 1865. A few daysafterparole he was severly injured in the Sultana Steamer disaster of on 27April1865, near Memphis, Tennessee. He was badly burned in the fire and explosionthatsank the steamboat. He spent the next few months in military hospitals andhewas discharge from the Army in August 1865. He returned to LarueCounty,Kentucky and lived there until 1869. He then moved to the state of Kansas for12years and then to Arizona for 22 years. He was a farmer in the town ofTombstone,at a time for famous gunfighters. The last ten years of his life werespentin Los Angeles, California in an old soldiers home. James filed for apensionin December of 1885. He died of stomach cancer on 4 June 1914 in the veteranshomeand is buried in Los Angeles. He died with no money or heirs.
