Bilal Hashmi
Dr. Bilal Hashmi, age 69 of Bellingham, died Friday, June 24th, 2005,atthe U of W Hospital of an aggressive form of leukemia. He was buriedatEvergreen-Washelli Memorial Park in North Seattle with full Muslimriteson June 26th, 2005. There will be a memorial service at the RomeGrange,Mt. Baker Highway, on July 17th at 3:00 pm. He was born Sept. 27th, 1935 in Montgomery (Sahiwal), Punjab,BritishIndia (now Pakistan) to M. Sadiq Hashmi and Razia Begum Gilani.He waspreceded in death by his parents; a brother, Tariq; a sister,AquillaAskery; and two nieces. He attended Government Middle School, Kahinoor, British India(nowIndia), and graduated from Government High School, Dera GhaziKhan,Pakistan. He received a B.Sc in Math and Physics from theUniversity ofthe Punjab, Lahore Pakistan, in 1957. He also received aMA in Sociologyin 1962 from the above institution. He received his PhDfrom WSU in 1972.He did most of his teaching at EWU, Cheney, WA, withassignments inMexico, Thailand, Russia, Ukraine, Ghana, China andCanada. He alsotaught at WWU and the U of W after his retirement. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Margaret Elizabeth BarrieHashmiof Bellingham; his son Gibran Sadiq, daughter-in-law Karen andgrandsonIsaac P. Bilal Hashmi of Seattle; step-mother Saadat BegumGilani,brother Umar Hashmi and sisters Nahid and Mariam, all ofLahore,Pakistan; sister Aisha of Dera Ghazi, Khan, Pakistan; sisterTalat ofOntario, Canada; and brothers Khalid and Zubair of BC, Canada;andnumerous nephews and nieces in Pakistan and North America. He hadspecialcousins, Cheemo, and her children of Oxford, England, and NaimHashmi ofNew Hampshire. Also great Bellingham buddies Russ Hansen andwife, Pati,and Jimmy John. He also had great buddies-forever inCanada, Faiz andRauf. Dr. Hassan Gardezi of Petersborough, Ontario,Canada, was hislongtime mentor. Also the entire Quadwai family ofSpokane and Omak werelongtime friends of Bilal and his family. Dr. Hashmi was proud of his mother tongue, Punjabi. He greatlyenjoyedhis career in teaching. He loved his family, especially, SakiBaytu. Hewas a good and true friend. He had a longtime specialinterest in theplight of the Palestinian people, as well as his ownSouth Asian peoples.He was a teacher who still kept learning, and afriend of justice andpeace for all peoples of our world.
