- Eugene A. Rydz, ex-owner of paper: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Chicago Tribune (IL) - September 16, 1993
Deceased Name: Eugene A. Rydz, ex-owner of paper
Eugene A. Rydz, 69, former longtime owner and publisher of the Star-Sentinel newspaper in Proviso and Leyden Townships, died Tuesday of cancer in the Chateau Village Nursing Center in Willowbrook.
A lifelong Chicago area resident, Mr. Rydz became a Star-Sentinel co-owner in 1955, while working in a retail sales. The transition was a natural, his wife, Irene, said, because ``He was always dealing with the public. He was self-taught, I guess you would say, and he was very good at it.''
Starting in advertising, Mr. Rydz eventually learned layout, typesetting and took over as the paper's sole owner. Undeterred by deadlines and breaking news, he was a steadying presence at the community newspaper, which reached a circulation of about 30,000 before Mr. Rydz sold it in 1987. ``He had patience,'' said his wife of 44 years, who worked as his bookkeeper. ``He would never raise his voice. He was the type that you took a liking to immediately, and his relationships lasted for years.''from 1984 until his death. He belonged to the Melrose Park Chamber of Commerce for 30 years, and founded the Bellwood Chamber of Commerce in 1957. He was also a volunteer board member with the Bellwood Boys Club for many years until 1991.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Kenneth, Thomas and Gregory; a daughter, Coni; three brothers; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in Modell Funeral Home, 7710 S. Cass Ave., Darien. Mass will follow at Our Lady of Peace Church, 701 Plainfield Rd. in Darien.
