Two more brothers are still serving. In a letter conveying to the relatives the sad news of the Death of Sergt C.W Bench deceased companys Captain says " It is with the deepest regret that I write to report the death of your son, Sergt C. Bench. He met his death like the very gallant soldier he was whilst manning the parapet. He did not suffer and was killed almost instantaneously. Knowing of your numerous losses, I put him in the second line this time instead of the first, it being a safer place, but as fate decreed, he was our first casualty. He is a great loss to his regiment, to me and to his numerous friends"
