- Emmanuel Jackson Smith was killed by the Indians, and I'm assumingthatevent occurred in Texas, near Lampasas. As the story has beentold,Emmanuel and his brother, John S., were out in the cedar breakcuttingtrees when they saw Indians approaching. Emmanuel and John hadone horseand one mule. Emmanuel put his younger brother on the horseand told himto ride hard. Emmanuel mounted the mule, but it was notfast enough tooutrun the Indians. The Indians caught up with Emmanueland sclaped andkilled him. John survived to tell the story. EmmanuelJackson was namedafter his father's brother Manuel Jackson Smith andEmmanuel Jackson'sbrother, Jesse Nelms Smith, named his first son,Gilbert Jackson Smith, after his slain uncle.
