This Indenture made this 19 th day of October in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Sixteen, between Samuel Scaggs and Icy his wife, Polly Scaggs, James Scaggs, John Scaggs and Zebulon Scaggs children heirs and legal representatives of Anne Scaggs deceased late Anne Lewis daughter of Samuel Lewis deceased of the county of Greenbrier State of Virginia of the one part and John and Joseph Mann of the county of Monroe State of Virginia of the other part. --------- that the said children , heirs and legal representitives for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar lawful money of Virginia them in hand paid by the said John and Jacob Mann the reciept whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted bargin and sold and by these presents do grant and bargin and sell unto the said John and Jacob Mann their heirs and assigns one certain tract or parcel of land containing Fifty acres by survey be the same more or less, lying and being in the said County of Monroe it being part of a survey of 300 acres for which a patent issued to Samuel Lewis the 18th March 1790. the said part was alloted so the said heirs of Anne Scaggs deceased by the commissoners appointed by the county Court of Monroe this 22 June 1815. Which Fifty acres is know by W1 and is bounded as follows towit. Begining at a spanish on the North side of Indian Creek corner to said patent and with S47 E28 poles crossing the creek to two thickoues a dogwood S33 E64 poles crossing said creek at the mouth of back Creek to the sugar tree Sq. E40 poles to two thickoues a sugar tree S30 E40 poles to a white oak thickory S4 W32 poles to three white oaks N80 E24 poles to two white oaks corner to the patent. Thence through the original grant N30 W50 poles to a yellow --- dogwood N75 W36 poles totwo sugar trees la dogwood on a hill side N30 W62 poles crossing back creek toa white oak thickory N45 W47 poles to a white oak North 40poles toa white oak on a hilside N50 W50 poles toa white oak nothe patent line and with the same S30 W34 poles tothe Begining together with and singular the appartenancies there unto belonging or in any wise appertaining to have and hold the said fifty acres of land with it's appartenances unto the John and Jacob their heirs and assigns forever to the only proper ---- and behoof of them the said John and Jacob Mann thier heirs and assigns forever and the said children and heirs for themselves said heirs executors and administrators do consent with the said John and Jacob Mann thier heirs and assigns that they the said children heirs and legal representitives the said fifty acres of land with it's appartencies unto said John and Jacob Mann thier heirs and assigns against the claim or claims of them the said children and heirs of said Anne Lewis their heirs and of all and every person or persons whatever shall and will warrent andn forever defaud by these presents inwitness whereof the said children heirs and representitives of said Ann have here unto set their hands and seals on the day and year first above written signs and seals adn delivers in the presence of Monroe County Court towit.

Icy Scggs seal The document goes on and the witnesses swear that the above is true ect... So Ann Skaggs wife of Joseph died in 1815. So her and Joseph must of been devoriced before he married Margaret Swope.
