COTTAGE GROVE - The funeral will be held Oct. 4 for NovaLeonaSimmons-McClintic of Cottage Grove, who died Oct. 1 ofage-relatedcauses. She was 95.
Simmons-McClintic was born March 7, 1908, in Imnaha to Jasper andAmyBarnes Simmons. She married John McClintic in 1930. He died in1965.
She and her brothers and sisters worked on the family homestead,wherethey grew apricots and tomatoes. Chief Joseph's tribe would passby theirhome in the spring and fall, and her parents bought moccasinsfrom themfor their daughters.
Her family lived in Mount Angel for a year before settling in Eugenein1920. She finished grade school but her parents could not afford tobuybooks for her to attend high school.
She worked in the hop fields as a check girl and later in thebeanfields, eventually becoming a yard boss.
She served as a Cub Scout leader. She wintered in Arizona for 20yearsand her interests included going to the desert and collectingrocks. Sheenjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. She also enjoyedtaking walks andwalked a mile every day until she was 94. She will beremembered forsaying that walking was good for the soul, plus younever knew what youwere going to see.
Survivors include a son, Roger McClintic of Cottage Grove; a brother,BobSimmons of Alaska; two sisters, Vivian Harper of Alabama and VioletAdamsof Albany; three grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren.
Saturday's service will be held at 2 p.m. at Lane Memorial Gardens&Funeral Home in Eugene. Burial will be at Lane Memorial Gardens.
