- 1897 Tioga County History Chapter 59 Part One - Wellsboro - Biographies ELMER BACON, a native of Vermont, came to Charleston township,Tiogacounty, early in the present century and settled near Round Top,where hefollowed farming and lumbering. He married Mary Merrick, adaughter ofIsrael Merrick, Sr., one of the pioneers of Wellsboro.Eleven childrenwere born to this union, as follows: George, a residentof Nebraska;Elmer, deceased; Mary, deceased wife of W. P. Shumway;Henry, a residentof Dakota; Rebecca, widow of John A. McEwen, ofWilliamsport; Niram, aresident of Wisconsin; Levi L., who enlisted inthe New York SouthernTier Rifles during the Rebellion and died atGeorgetown, D. C.; MorganL., a physician of Wellsboro; Sarah, wife ofR. F. Wilson, of the sameplace, and David, deceased. Mr. Bacon died inCharleston township inApril, 1847, and his wife in 1873.
