- 1857 - Quote from Vital Statistics, Taylor County, Kentucky: "Pleasant M.DeWitt, born 16 May, Taylor Co., Ky., to John B. DeWitt, Jr. andwife,nee Hedgepeth."
He left his parent's home near Skidmore, Nodaway, Missouri in thesummerof 1882 for "greener pastures" and to find government land tohomestead.He first went to Kentucky, then to Crawford County,Illinois, stopping inVincennes, Indiana to work for John Duncan,cradling wheat for $1.00, andthen to his Uncle James DeWitt's farmnear Palestine, Crawford, Illinoisarriving there on 4 July, 1882. Heworked for $1.00 a day for five weeksbreaking 120 acres of ground forwheat which at that time was selling for$1.00 a bushel.. He remainedthere and worked for $16.00 per month untilthe middle of Septemberwhen he left to go to Kansas. At that time therailroad stopped atHarper, Kansas 28 miles from his destination ,Sharon, Kansas.
