My great-great-great-great-grandfather was William Skaggs as follows: William Skaggs b. 20 Dec 1757, Horse Pasture, North Carolina, m. (1)1778, Mary Simpson, b. 1760, m. (2) 2 Sep 1802, in GreenCounty,Kentucky, Polly Pierce, b. 25 Jul 1784. William died 20 Aug1848, GreenCounty, Kentucky. William was an "indian spy" (i.e scout)for theVirginia Militia during the Revolutionary War. He was an earlypioneerinto Kentucky and is buried just north of Allendale in Green County KY.
Some of his exploits are discussed in Allen's "A History of Kentucky"."A History of Kentucky" also talks about "Squire" Skaggs, and itimpliesthat they are the same person. I have also seen the genealogy work ofothers that says that this William and "Squire" are the same person.However, I have never seen any document that clearly states that this WilliamSkaggs and "Squire" Skaggs are indeed the same person. Some have also said that he was known as "Captain" (maybe the Corn Stalk Militia???). If anyone has located documentation that would prove this, Iwouldappreciate a description of the source(s). Looking for info on Abel Elkins, born ca 1776, Virginia. Abel married Polly Skaggs on January 13, 1803 in Green County, Kentucky. Bond put up by Abel and Jessica Elkins. Consent by Wm Skaggs as father of Polly, but no Elkins were listed. Wit. James McVay & Jessa Elkin
Listed on 1800 Green County, Ky Tax records were Abel, Nathaniel, David, and Jesse. I have eliminated: Abel - b1776 married Polly Skaggs in 1803. Nathaniel - was married in 1798 (may be a brother of Abel) David was a baptist preacher, b ca1779. (may also be brother of Abel)
This only leaves Jesse who is listed as giving consent to marriage of Hannah Elkins to Thomas Laxton, married 12 Dec 1799 by Benj. Lynn
Jesse also gives consent on 7 Aug 1799 to marriage of Betsy (Patsy) Elkin and William Warren. They were not bonded until 22 Sep 1813 and married, also by Benj. Lynn.
