Halifax County, Virginia deed, Book 18, page 472: 4 September, 1800 - This indenture made this twenty fourth day of September in the year of our lord in one thousand eight hundred between William Grayham, lawful attorney for John Compton who was heir at law of John Compton decd of the County of Green in the State of Kentucky and Mary Compton of the County of Halifax of the other part. Witnesseth that the said William Grayham, attorney for John Compton for and in consideration of the sum of twenty one pounds thirteen shillings to him in hand paid by the said Mary Compton before sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof the said William Grayham attorney as aforesaid doth acknowledge hath given granted and bargained and sold and by these presents do give grant bargain and sell and confirm unto the said Mary Compton one certain tract or parcel of land lying in Halifax County on the waters of Buckskin Creek containing fifty eight acres the same more or less and bounded as followeth beginning at a red oak on the road in William Kirks line thence on said Kirks line to Wyatts line thence on Wyatts line to Fishers line thence on Fishers line to Mathes line thence on Mathes line to Thomas Leates line thence on ??? Leates line so far as to include all the land the said John Compton ???? Except thirty two acres sold by James Eastham Sheriff with all woods ways waters and ???? to the same belonging or appertaining with the ???? and ???? remainder and ???? rents, ??? and prophets thereof unto the said Mary Compton his heirs and assigns forever to have to hold the said land and premises with theappertenances unto the said Mary Compton his heirs and ???? to the only proper use benefit and ???? of the said Mary Compton her heirs and assignsforever and the said William Grayham attorney as aforesaid for himself his heirs Executors and administrators doth covenant promise and grant to and with the said Mary Compton her heirs and assigns the the said William Grayham attorney as above his heirs ??? shall and will warrant and defend the said land with the appertenances unto the said Mary Compton her heirs and assigns forever against the claim and demand of him the said William Grayham attorney ??? as aforesaid and his heirs ??? and of all and every person and persons having or claiming any right or title to the aforesaid land or any part thereof in Witness whereof the said William Grayham attorney ???? hath hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal the day and year above written.
