Excerpt from this source:
Mathias Elmore, "husbandman", lived in Burlington County, New Jersey in the 1730*s. His "spinster" daughter Sarah was recorded as there marrying James Dennis on March 20, 1738.
In that same year (1738), Frederick County, Virginia was created from a portion of Orange County.
By 1744, Winchester was becoming established as the county seat and Mathias was recorded
as owning land north of there.
In 1751, Mathias deeded his property, "Cattail Meadows", to his son William (Deed Book 2, p. 205).
In 1755, Mathias obtained a grant of of other lands on Babbs Creek.

Sometime in the late 1750's or early 1760's, Mathias moved to Newberry County, South Carolina, where he acquired land in 1765. In 1763, he sold his Virginia land on Babbs Creek to Tristram Ewing (Deed Book 10, p. 571), appointing his "trusty friend Richard Ridgeway" to execute the deed. Designation of Ridgeway as Mathias agent may have been because Mathias was then living in South Carolina.
