Notes |
- Alexander Underwood was born in Green County KY 1816. His father I think was Chelesler Underwood ca.1793 North Carolina. Any info on this line would be much appreciated!

From: Gregory B. Graham [mailto:gbgraham@gte.net] Sent: Tuesday, August 25, 1998 9:33 PM Subject: KY & MO Underwoods I have seen several recent postings on Underwoods in Madison Co., MO and Green Co., KY. I have been researching Grahams and Combs in thatareaand I have accumulated some information on Chilester/Chichester Underwood. The following is a summary of what I have found: 1. In 1827 in Green Co., KY Chichester Underwood married PollyCombs. Some notes I found in a family bible (no indication of the source ofthenotes) state that my ancestor, Fielding Richard Combs was the step-son of Chichester and the son of Polly. Fielding was born in Green Co. in1823and lived most of his life in Madison Co., MO. Polly was a nicknameforMary. 2. I found the estate inventory (1827) and an estate settlement(1829)of James Underwood in Green Co., KY. The settlement lists disbursementsto Chichester, Hiram, John and Andrew Underwood. Hiram Underwood was the administrator. Chichester and Hiram received the largestdisbursementswith Hiram's being payments for "apt", probably payment for serving as administrator. Chichester's disbursement was listed as "recpt". Itwas either payment of a debt or distribution to an heir. John and Andrew received very small payments, under $1 as "recpt". In 1835 I found an allotment of dower to "Jane Underwood (late Steel)". 3. In a transcription of Green Co. marriages, I found a marriage of Jettester Underwood and Sally Combs on January 20, 1813, but I havenot found the original record for this marriage. I have found noothermention of Jettester. I have no factual basis for this thought, but I suspect thatChichesterand Jettester are the same person. Since Chet married Polly in 1827 itwould appear that he had a prior marriage since it has been stated that hehad children born prior to 1827. Hiram, John and Andrew arepossiblybrothers of Chicester, but that is impossible to tell from the estateinformationI have found.I hope this gives you some leads. If anyone findsanyinformation on Fielding Richard Combs, please let me know. He is my brickwall.GregGraham
