- Bertha lived alone in a two story farm house 2 miles from thecemeterythat herhusband Elias lay in when a huge tornado struck. Onher way tothe celler Bertha was hit by a two by four from the housewhile hangingon to a tree in the front yard. She was found clinging tothe tree layingover the foundation where the house used to be. Therewas nothing leftbut the foundation,tree and Berthasbody. She waskilled instantly from ablow to the forehead. She was 76.

Bertha Minne Coder, daughter of Fredrick William and Wilhelmina(Tank)Fahrenwald, and the fourth child of 13, was born February 1, 1874nearSteele City, Nebraska and departed this life May 23,1946 at the ageof72 years, 3 months, and 23 days. She received her schooling and grew to womanhood in the SteeleCityCommunity. She ws united in marriage to Elias Wampo Coder, March5, 1892.To this marriage 4 children were born; 3 daughters and 1 son,Dolly,Gertrude, Omar and Maudie. Maudie passed awayin infancy andDolly diedAugust 1938. Soon after their marriage they moved tothe AshCreekCommunity and attended the Methodist Church. In 1911 they moved to the Enosdale Community where she resideduntilher death. After the death of her husband in 1936, she still keptherhome and lived alone, although in poor health. She leaves to mourn her departure 1 daughter-in-law, 1 daughter,Mrs.Gertrude Coy and 1 son Omar Coder. Two sons-in-law, 15grandchildren, 5brothers and 2 sisters: Karl and Ernest ofPendleton,Oregon: William J.ofWashington,Kansas: Mrs. Agnes herren ofStillwater, Oklahoma and Mrs.Anna Gano of Barnes,Kansas and many otherclose relatives and friends. Funeral services were Sunday May 26 in Enosdale Church andIntermentmade in Enosdale Cemetery. " Grandma Coder", as she was affectionately called by everyone,waskind and loving mother, a good neighbor and friend. One who trustedGodin everything. Her devotion was to her home, her children and herlovelyflowers. She was loved by all who know her.
