EDSELL, EDSALL, ETSAL, or ELSAL, SAMUEL, from "Ridding in Bawrychier" (Redding in Berkshire), England, hatter, married 1st, May 29, 1665, in New York, Jannetje Wessels of Arnhem in Gelderland; married 2nd, Aug. 27, 1689, in Flh, Jannetje Stevens widow of Cors Jansen Beory of Newtown. In 1657 he was admitted a small burgher in N. A., and in 1664 took the oath of allegiance in New York to the English. In 1664 he owned and resided on a farm at Constable's Hoek, Bergen, New Jersey, as per page 137 of Volume 1 of Raum's New Jersey, to which place he probably removed from Newtown. In 1668 he was a member of the Council of Governor Carteret; in 1677 he was taxed in New York, and in 1687 a justice of the peace in Queens County. October 1, 1690, he was commissioned a justice of the peace of Kings County, as per. Col. Man. Issue:-- Annetje, baptized July 12, 1656; Judith, baptized May 15, 1658; Johannes, baptized Sept. 12, 1660--all in New Amsterdam; Ann; Julia; and Richard. (See p. 72 of Winfield's Hudson Co.) Signed his name "Samuel Edsall."
