Reprint, Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1996 [Excerpt, page 1158] CORLISS George Corliss, the immigrant ancestor, was born inDevonshire,England, about 1617, son of Thomas Corliss. He came to NewEngland in1639, and settled in Newbury, Massachusetts. He moved soonto Haverhill,where he resided the remainder of his life. He settled in1640 in thewest parish of Haverhill, and the farm, now known as thePoplar LawnFarm, was owned by a descendant, at last accounts. He wasthe firstsettler in that part of the town, and built a log house in1637. His namewas on the list of freemen in 1645. He was constable in1650, selectmanin 1648-53-57-69-79. His will was dated October 18,1686, and he diedOctober 19, 1686. It is a remarkable coincidence thatGeorge Corliss, hisson John and his grandson John, all died on thesame farm, and each onesitting in the same chair. He married, October26, 1645, at Haverhill,Joanna, daughter of Thomas Davis. Children:Mary, born September 6, 1646,married William Neff and was with HannahDustin when she was captured bythe Indians; John, mentioned below;Joanna, April 28, 1650; Martha, June2, 1652; Deborah, June 6, 1655;Ann, November 8, 1657; Huldah, November18, 1661; Sarah, February 23,1663.
