- KEYES, JOHN (11), youngest s. of Solomon and Frances, was b.inChelmsford, Mass., his birth there recorded. We first hear of himinMarlboro, Mass., where is recorded the birth of his children. Heprobablymoved to Shrewsbury about 1720, and was one of the founders ofthe churchthere. He m. Mch. 11, 1696, Mary, dau. of Gersham and Hannah(Johnson)Eames. Gersham Eames d. in Watertown, Mass., Nov. 25, 1676,and Mary wasb. four months after her father's death. Her mothersubsequently m. aWard, and became the mother of Col. Nahum Ward. InAug. 1723, a carpenterby the name of Ebenezer Bragg, was building ahouse for John, then Capt.John Keyes, in Shrewsbury. On the night ofthe 7th, the house beingnearly finished, was burned, as also the oldone near it in which MajorJohn was then residing. Six persons weresleeping in the new house. Threesons of Capt. Keyes, and two ofBragg's apprentices were burned, andBragg saved himself by jumpingfrom the window. John, usually known asthe famous Major John Keyes,lived with his wife 72 years. Theirson-in-law, Daniel Rand, m. MarthaBruce for his 2nd wife, was m. byMajor John who had then passed his85th year, and afterward lived withhis father-in-law. His farm wassubsequently known as the Rand farm, andwas purchased by Col. JosephHenshaw of Rand or his heirs. Maj. John d.Mch. 31, 1768. Mary, relictof Maj. John d. April 16, 1772, aged 95 yearsand one month."
