• Notes

  His father was killed in fighting in the Civil War and his motherlaterre-married. He didn't get along with his stepfather and ran away from home at theageof eight, walking to relatives in Tennessee. At the age of fourteenheoffered five years of labor to a man to finance his trip to Texas.  Settling inMilamCounty, Texas, Joe worked and eventually ran a cotton gin to repay his debt. Joseph and family moved from Milam to Coryell County, Texas in1885,settling in the Brown's Creek Community.
