- Thos. Edward PITTS enlisted in the merchant marines, Oct. 1943,andduring his short term of service in the Pacific area he has been inNewGuinea, Hawaii, New Caledonia, Australia, Midway and Alaska. On May24thhe received a shrapnel wound in his right hand, when the ship hewas onwas bombed, only 17 of he crew surviving. He has a 15 dayfurlough inAugust, which he spent with his family, returning to SanFrancisco forreassignment. His wife and two children make their homeon route 4,Sallisaw. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. H. PITTS reside inHaywood.
