This post is in reply to those of Doug Underwood (my brother) andJimUnderwood who, as far as I can tell, is a cousin of some removal.Thisinformation was compiled by one of the Brady Underwoods,whoseinformation is fairly good for at least several generations. I'llbeginwith the least-documented. John Underwood came to America in1751. Hesettled in Virginia and married. He and his wife (nameunknown) had twosons, John (Jack) Underwood and Tom Underwood. John(Jack) marriedElizabeth Abernathy in Virginia. At some point, theymoved to Illinois.They had three children, all born in Illinois:Elizabeth, Mary, andWilliam Davis Underwood, born 12/7/1817. The twogirls died of a form ofmalaria. After this, they moved to Georgia.Between 1830-36, JackUnderwood and Lewis Lawler came to Texas inpursuit of a Mexican landgrant in the vicinity of present-day PrairieDell, Texas. Fear of theMexicans and the Comanches drove them back toGeorgia. In 1860, WilliamDavis Underwood returned to Texas to claimthe grant.He had marriedBethsaida Louisa Phelps in Alabama in 1841.Shortly after their marriage,they moved to Mississippi. While livingin Mississippi, they had eightchildren: Mary (b.: 9/15/1842; d.:1926,Alameda Community, EastlandCounty, Texas. John, b.: 12/1843; d. 1858in Mississippi. William Davis ,b.: 1847, Mississippi, d.: 1925,Winters, TX. Jerry Myer SpruelUnderwood, b.: 9/15/1849, d.: 1926,Turney, TX. James Edward Underwood,b.: 4/20/1852 d.:2/21/1945, Brady,TX (our great grandfather). Infant whodied. Enoch Robert Underwood,b.:10/13/1855, d.: 1/2/1946, AlamedaCommunity, Eastland County, TX.Dorcas Martha Underwood, b.: 3/3/1857,d.: 1925, Rocky, OK. Levi BeanUnderwood, b.:9/15/1860 Trinity County,TX, d.: 8/1/1957 Georgetown,TX. Louisa Bethsaida Underwood, b. 1/29/1866Bell County, TX, d.:10/11/1894, Kempner, TX. James Edward Underwood (seeabove) marriedAmanda Wells in 1870. They had four children: Mary E.(Mollie)Underwood (b.:1871) , James E. Underwood (b.:1873), John H.Underwood(b.: 4/28/1875), and Melissa Underwood (b.:1879), all in BellCounty,Texas. I do not have the exact date of deaths. Amanda diedon12/22/1881. He then married Meluiria Davee and moved toMcCullouchCounty, near Brady. The children of this marriage wereArthur (b.: 1883),Edna (b.:1884), Robert (b. 1886), Edwin (b.: 1888),Fritz (b.:1890), Jack(b.:1894),Millard Elmo (b.:1897), Annie Underwood(b.: 1901 - my lastinformation is that Annie Underwood Collingsworthis still living in SanAngelo, TX), Bud Underwood (b,: 1903, DollieUnderwood (b.: 12/18/15),twins: Elbert & Albert (b.: 1907). AltogetherJames E. Underwood had 21children, 16 of whom lived to maturity. Mybrother (Doug of the postabove) and I have, then, this lineage: JohnUnderwood>JackUnderwood>William Davis Underwood>James Edward Underwood>JamesUnderwood>Homer Underwood. Uncle Elmo was the barbecueUnderwoods inBrownwood. Leonard, who I think is a gradson of Elmo, isstill in thatbusiness there along with his sons in other parts of thestate.
