Notes |
- I have researched the Brown-Routh families for more than 25 years. Ican assure you that there is no connection to Alexander Brown andDragging Canoe that can be proven. 271 applications to the GuionMiller Cherokee Rolls were made using Alexander Brown blood line allwere rejected. The only place that the Canoe name was in the 271Applications, John Thomas Brown, grandson of Alexander and VioletBarton-Brown, when asked who his Grandparents were, stated Alexanderand Sarh Canoe-Brown (full blood Indian). I don't know why he saidSarah Canoe as a lad the census show he lived next to his grandmotherViolet Barton-Brown in Missouri. The reason all were rejected, theyconnected Our Alexander to the 1835 Georgia Indian Roll. There was aAlexander Brown, Jr. on that roll, however the ages were to far apartto be our Alexander. Alexander Brown claimed in Missouri that he was1/2 Cherokee and had papers th prove it. That he signed up inTennessee before he moved to Missouri in 1835-36. These papers werenever found. Alexander's brother, Aaron also claimed to be 1/2Cherokee. All of his grandchildren's Indian applicatios were alsorejected. They made their claim through a James Brown who singed someCherokee Treaties in early 1800's. I have been to Alexander's gravenear Brighton, Missouri (Brock Cemetery) I was there with the CherokeeTribe then from Fair Play, Missouri and have some pictures of theIndian Ceremony for Alexander. My wife joined that tribe as theyaccepted Alexander's Indian blood line. My wife comes from Alexander'sdaughter Sarah. Frank McClelland fmcclell@earthlink.net
